Balayage is hand-painted freehand, giving a softer, more natural grow-out that suits clients who want low-maintenance color. Foils place color more precisely and evenly, which is better suited to bold, uniform, or all-over lightening. Your stylist will usually recommend one over the other based on your current hair color, how often you're willing to come in for touch-ups, and the level of contrast you're after.
